We need your feedback!

Help us pilot test the updated OOI Data Lab Online Lab Manual v2.0

for Introductory Oceanography Courses

Are you looking for ways to incorporate large data sets into your classes that are student and teacher friendly?  Whether you are teaching remotely or face-to-face, we have a collection of online lab activities that focus on important oceanographic themes and topics.

Background

Beginning in January 2020, a team of faculty contributors worked to compile a sequence of OOI Data Labs into an online laboratory manual.  It includes topics in biological, chemical, physical and geological oceanography for use in typical Introductory Oceanography courses.  The manual is a collection of 8 lab exercises, with built-in assessments, and accompanying instructor guides.  See the collection on on our web site.

We conducted a pilot test with a cohort of 20 faculty in Fall 2020, which provided important feedback to the development team on how to improve the existing manual.  We will release an updated Online Lab Manual v.2.0 in Summer 2021.  (Note: the eight lab chapters/topics will remain the same.)

Pilot Test Cohort 2

We need your help to “test drive” the updated version of the lab exercises with your students!  We are seeking an implementation cohort of 18-20 faculty to implement 2 labs with students in Fall 2021.  We are offering a $750 stipend, which includes a training webinar in early August (date TBD), and ask that you provide detailed feedback about the activities and your experience implementing them. We will not be collecting student data (no IRB requirements).

The implementation must be completed by December 2021.

We especially encourage applications from faculty who teach at two-year institutions and whose primary background may not be in oceanography.

To apply, please fill out this registration form by June 1, 2021.
Accepted applicants will be notified ~2 weeks after registration closes.
