Updates from our June & July Workshops
It’s been a busy summer for the OOI Data Labs team and for the many faculty who have joined us at our workshops.
We hosted our second Development Workshop in June at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, and our third in July at Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA. Twenty-one faculty from community colleges, primarily undergraduate institutions, and universities from Hawaii to Rhode Island and all points in between joined us at these two workshops.
We also hosted our first Mini-Workshop at the July Earth Educators’ Rendezvous in Nashville, TN, where over 30 faculty learned about the OOI, data literacy, the learning cycle, and the collection of interactive data widgets being developed by our community members.

We’re also looking forward to our next workshop at Western Washington University in late August. Fifteen professors, many from the Northwest, will join us for our final weeklong OOI Data Labs Development Workshop of the year.
New Data Explorations in Development
Thanks to the support of the National Science Foundation, at each development workshop, we work with professors to design and develop new OOI Data Labs that will engage, motivate, and support undergraduates in the use of real world data from the Ocean Observatories Initiative.
Our June cohort is currently working on the following interactive OOI data activities.
- The Thermohaline Circulation (conveyor belt) and NADW Formation in the Irminger Sea
- Dynamic Air-Sea Interactions
- Chlorophyll-a in Upwelling and Stratified Temperate Regions
And our July workshop participants are working on this wide variety of online activities.
- CO2 Exchange Between Air and Sea
- Factors affecting Primary Production
- Magma Movement and the Shape of the Seafloor
- Oceanographic Fingerprint of Hurricane Michael at the New England Shelf Break
We expect these activities to be completed over the course of the fall. Each team will then host a webinar to showcase their activity to the community, along with their experiences using it in their classes.

Oceans Sciences 2020 – Call for Abstracts
We hope to see you in San Diego, and we encourage you to submit an abstract to the following session that our Data Labs community is co-hosting.
ED011 Teaching with Data: Engaging students in learning ocean sciences through large data sets

This session is a great fit for anyone who has used OOI or similar ocean observing system data in their courses, including our collection of OOI Data Explorations. We’d love to hear what you’ve learned through your experiences, and hope you’ll consider submitting. Abstracts are due September 11th.
Project EDDIE Module Development Workshop
Project EDDIE will be hosting a Module Development Workshop at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota from October 28-30. This workshop focuses on participants developing flexible EDDIE teaching modules that pair scientific concepts and quantitative reasoning with teaching with data.
We think this workshop would be a great fit for those interested in developing activities based on OOI datasets as well, and we encourage you to check it out. The application deadline is August 25th.
