OOI Ocean Data Development Workshops
If you are interested in learning how use and develop your own educational resources from the OOI, please consider attending one of our 4.5 day development workshops.
We invite you to work with fellow professors to learn about and engage in efforts to bring Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI) data into your undergraduate teaching. Professors from Community Colleges, Primary Undergraduate Institutions (PUI), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) who teach introductory courses (100 and 200 level) with a strong emphasis on oceanography themes and concepts are especially encouraged to attend this workshop.
At the workshop you will learn how to use OOI Data in your Undergraduate Teaching, work with your peers to redesign and existing Data Lab, modify Python or Matlab code (using GitHub and Jupyter Notebooks), or create something totally new!
Benefits of Participation
- Workshop expenses (airfare, accommodations and meals) are paid for by a grant from the National Science Foundation. In addition, a $300 stipend is available for providing feedback on how you have used OOI in your teaching as a result of participation in the workshop and follow-on experiences.
- Participate in professional development in active learning practices and teaching with data pedagogy developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California Berkeley.
- Meet other professors who are interested in oceanography teaching and research. Each workshop will create a cohort of professors implementing activities in their undergraduate teaching and sharing feedback on how it worked in their classroom.
- Take advantage of the opportunity to apply for a $2,000 mini grant to continue the development of your OOI activity after the workshop.
- Work with colleagues to develop a citable activity that will be made available to the oceanography community via the Web.
OOI Ocean Data Lab Workshop “Quick Look” Agenda

| Day 1 | Engage in hands on investigations of our collection of 30 classroom ready Data Labs that use real data from the OOI. Activity topics include primary production, properties of seawater, and tectonics/seamounts. Activities are cross-referenced to typical oceanography textbooks. |

| Day 3 | Learn how to use the OOI Data Portal and how you can use this data to conduct research in and out of the classroom with your students. Introduction to Python and Jupyter Notebook resources developed with OOI data.
Present your Data Lab to colleagues and learn how to apply for a mini grant to continue your work! |

| Post Consultation and Webinars | Participants are encouraged to submit for the mini grant program to create new Data Labs. Mini grants recipients receive post consultation and Activity Design Review meetings offered virtually to help participants to complete their Data Lab creation. Authors are encouraged to present their creation at a professional meeting (AGU, ASLO). |
Participant Expectations
Prior to the Workshop:
- Review our website and provide a written response to a set of provided questions. Questions will focus on your ideas for using data in teaching and learning.
During Workshop:
- Participate in reviewing OOI Data Labs
- Work with your peers to either a) customize an existing OOI Data Lab for your class, b) modify existing code (Python or Matlab/Jupyter Notebook) to create a new Data Lab, or c) work with a new OOI data set to create something completely new!
Post Workshop:
- Keep notes on the implementation of the OOI activities in terms of what students are struggling with, what they like, how they are interacting with the interface, etc. We will provide a template and a set of guiding questions.
- Participate in interviews with project staff (going through the OOI activities step by step and providing feedback).
- Apply for a mini grant to continue to develop new OOI education applications.
A $300 stipend is available is available for providing feedback on how you have used OOI in your teaching as a result of participation in the workshop and follow-on experiences.
